Magnetic concentric tube robots: Introduction and analysis

چکیده
In this paper, we propose a new type of continuum robot, referred to as magnetic concentric tube robot (M-CTR), for performing minimally invasive surgery in narrow and difficult-to-access areas. The combines tubes actuation benefit from the ‘follow leader’ behaviour, dexterity stability existing robots, while targeting millimetre-sized external diameters. These three kinematic properties are assessed through numerical experimental studies performed on prototype M-CTR. They with general forward inverse kineto-static models continuation bifurcation analysis, specific setup. presents unique capabilities terms deployment active management, its tip orientability is also among best reported other robots at scale.

Interactive Motion Planning for Concentric Tube Robots
Concentric tube robots may enable new, safer minimally invasive surgical procedures by taking curved paths to difficult-to-reach areas of a patient’s anatomy. Operating these devices is hard due to their complex and unintuitive kinematics. Existing position control methods for driving the robot’s tip can cause the robot to collide with sensitive structures in the anatomy associated with patient...
متن کاملConcentric Tube Robots for Minimally Invasive Surgery
INTRODUCTION The human body was not designed to facilitate surgical repair. Thus, in order to minimize collateral damage to healthy tissue, many interventions require following complex curved paths through tissue and body lumens to reach surgical targets. The smallest existing instrument technologies utilizing this approach are comprised of catheters and endoscopes for passing through body lume...
متن کاملEquilibrium Conformations of Concentric-tube Continuum Robots
Robots consisting of several concentric, preshaped, elastic tubes can work dexterously in narrow, constrained, and/or winding spaces, as are commonly found in minimally invasive surgery. Previous models of these "active cannulas" assume piecewise constant precurvature of component tubes and neglect torsion in curved sections of the device. In this paper we develop a new coordinate-free energy f...
متن کاملConcentric Tube Robots: The State of the Art and Future Directions
Seven years ago, concentric tube robots were essentially unknown in robotics, yet today one would be hard pressed to find a major medical robotics forum that does not include several presentations on them. Indeed, we now stand at a noteworthy moment in the history of these robots. The recent maturation of foundational models has created new opportunities for research in control, sensing, planni...
متن کاملEndonasal Skull Base Tumor Removal Using Concentric Tube Continuum Robots: A Phantom Study.
Objectives The purpose of this study is to experimentally evaluate the use of concentric tube continuum robots in endonasal skull base tumor removal. This new type of surgical robot offers many advantages over existing straight and rigid surgical tools including added dexterity, the ability to scale movements, and the ability to rotate the end effector while leaving the robot fixed in space. In...
